Gowans' work has progressed through the problematic structures of art school, guidance from Valerie Olsen and husband at the time John Olsen, and several other major influences including Vincent Van Gogh resulting in the mature work of the present time.
Having always been influenced by his immediate environment, most of the past decade has been based on both the rural and suburban landscape. These landscapes are created using varied locations and themes, many of which are based around Gloucester, Haberfield and Central Sydney.
After a successful period in the mid 1990's Gowans felt the need to retreat and learn to develop the ability to express his personal style with assistance from mentor Jenny Heller. During this time he also traveled abroad to Europe and North America, where the great galleries assisted in filling the gaps in his learning.
Gowans' most recent works to date are bold cityscapes drawn with heavily weighted black lines, they demonstrate a confidence that has grown without the constraint of commercial interests. Using Gaudi as his architect he highlights the chaos and intense movement of a large city and the organic manner in which they grow. In the artist's eyes, these works are the most personal and expressive to date.
Gowans works predominantly in acrylic paint on heavy duty artist quality paper or canvas. He tends to blur the line between what is a painting and what is a drawing.
